Before Travelling: All you need to know


Passports
Valid passports and visas are required to enter Australia. However you can travel freely from state to state.

Customs

Strict laws prohibit and restrict import of fire arms and weapons.

Animals and some foodstuffs will be quarantined.

Anti-drug laws are strictly enforced.

A yellow fever vaccination for traveller entering Australia is the only health requirement and is only necessary in some circumstances - if you've been in Africa or South America in the last week. You may bring in 1125 ml of alcoholic liquor (per traveller over the age of 18) duty/tax free as long as they accompany you through customs and are not intended for commercial purposes. 250 grams of tobacco products can be brought in and the same rules apply.

Currency

The dollar - Australian not U.S.! Notes come in $100, $50, $20, $10, $5. Coins are $2, $1, 50c, 20c, 10, and 5c. There are 100c in one dollar.

Health

Major health risk in Australia is sunburn and sunstroke. Protect yourself from the sun and drink plenty!! A campaign running throughout Australia is the Slip, Slop, Slap. This means slip on a T-shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat.

Electricity

Electrical current in Australia is 240 volts and power points take slanted three-prong plugs. Australian power plugs and power points are unlike those in Japan, the USA or Europe.
